Media Committee
The primary goal of the UBC Vaccine Literacy Club is to communicate accurate information about vaccines and science, which will increase trust and help overcome vaccine hesitancy.
The Media Committee aims to raise awareness about vaccines using creative art forms such as short videos, books, comic strips, and more. We previously published a children’s book called Learning About Vaccines: Hero Helpers and will work on distribution through library readings and elementary school visits, as well as increasing accessibility through translations.
Our Children’s Book on Vaccines: hero Helpers
Learning About Vaccines: Hero Helpers follows the story of a young child, as they learn about vaccines and their importance in preventing illness.
After hearing about vaccines on the news, Brian decides to explore how they work with their teacher, Mr. Thomas. As immune cells in the body, Brian and Mr. Thomas act as superheroes to protect the human body from a villainous virus.
From the initial vaccination to antibody production, Brian and Mr. Thomas learn how different cells in the body contribute to our immune response. Along with the help of the vaccine, it’s up to Brian and Mr. Thomas to protect the body from Virus the Villain!
All proceeds will be donated to GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, who aims to create equal vaccine access around the world.
bridging the gap
Scientific and technological advances have been increasing considerably in the last 30 years. This makes it hard to follow for many in the general public.
Conversations about vaccines are ones we should be having with our families, friends, and the next generation. But for many of us, it’s not a topic we often talk about, not even in classrooms.
This creates a knowledge gap that can have a profound effect in areas of our lives, creating opportunities for mistrust and hesitancy.
children’s book
We want to create a clear picture book that is accessible to audiences of various ages and cultural backgrounds, to reach out to younger demographics and teach them about the scientific breakthroughs in science. Families can read this book together and learn about vaccines.
presentations AND WORKSHOPS
We facilitate workshops for students in the Metro Vancouver area, and clubs and student organizations on campus. We hope to disseminate accurate information on vaccines and empower people to share that with their friends, family, and loved ones.
in-community workshops
Sharing age-appropriate and culturally relevant information is one of our major goals. We connect with scientists and faculty at UBC and beyond, and we work to deliver presentations and workshops with interactive and inclusive activities for elementary school, middle school, and high school classrooms, led by biology, immunology and public health students at UBC!
Depending on restrictions and provincial guidelines, the workshops can be in-person, online and even hybrid. If you are interested in a presentation, please reach out to us through ubcvlceducation@gmail.com!
